DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing
Federal DOT regulations require drug and alcohol testing for employees in safety-sensitive positions. This applies to employers regulated by the FMCSA, FTA, PHMSA, FAA, FRA, and USCG.
ComplianceOne manages complete DOT drug and alcohol testing programs, including:
– Pre-employment drug testing (required before a driver or safety-sensitive employee begins work)
– Random drug and alcohol testing (DOT requires a minimum annual testing rate for covered employees)
– Post-accident drug and alcohol testing (required after qualifying accidents under DOT rules)
– Reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing (triggered when a trained supervisor observes signs of substance use)
– Return-to-duty and follow-up testing (required before an employee returns to safety-sensitive duties after a violation)
All DOT drug tests use a standard 5-panel urine test that screens for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids (including semi-synthetic opioids), and PCP. Alcohol testing is conducted using an evidential breath testing (EBT) device operated by a certified Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT).
Workplace Drug Testing for Non-Regulated Employers
Not every employer falls under DOT regulation. Many Kansas businesses choose to implement workplace drug testing programs voluntarily. ComplianceOne builds non-regulated drug and alcohol testing programs customized to your company’s requirements.
Our non-regulated programs include the same test types as DOT programs (pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty) but with flexibility in panel selection, testing frequency, and policy structure.
We offer 5-panel, 10-panel, and expanded panel drug tests depending on your needs. We also offer hair follicle testing and oral fluid testing for employers who need alternatives to urine-based screening.

How Our Drug Testing Process Works
1. You contact ComplianceOne to schedule a test or send an employee to our walk-in clinic.
2. Our certified collector verifies the donor’s identity and completes all chain-of-custody documentation.
3. The specimen is collected following federal chain-of-custody procedures and shipped to a SAMHSA- certified laboratory.
4. The lab analyzes the specimen and reports results to our Medical Review Officer (MRO).
5. The MRO reviews results and contacts the donor if needed before issuing a final verified result.
6. You receive the final result through our secure online portal.
Negative results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours. Non-negative results require MRO review and may take an additional 1 to 3 business days.
